Hook

TYPEFACE

Hook is a display type marked by subtle barbs and curls. At once delicate and self-assured, Hook is designed for large settings in order to preserve its forms. It’s most effectively used for headlines and for displaying short pull quotes. Hook was released in December 2020.

Its forms are inspired by the hook of a song—a peculiar riff or lyric, repeated throughout the track, that tugs at the listener’s ears. Like its namesake, Hook is characterized by small, repeating twists. These are evident in the confident hairpin bends of certain serifs and the swerving joints present in most lowercase letters.

Hook is the first font that I developed for myself. It is the project that made me appreciate the finer technical aspects of typemaking, and opened me to the amount of time and work involved in creating a delicate typeface. It was through this project that I seeked help and mentorship from Type Crit Crew and Alphabettes, and got to meet kind, wonderful, and talented people to learn from.

These beautiful paintings were made by Tintin Lontoc.
